Khaleja Review

It is a dream for every actor to be casted in different genres. Mahesh luckily acted in Takkari Donga, Bobby, Nijam in his early stages but changed his track after miserable failure of Naani. He sticked to action genres played safe with movies like Arjun, Athadu, Pokiri, Sainikudu, Athithi. Pokiri was a runaway success mainly because of the high entertainment quotient in the movie. After having a 3 year break instead of switching to a family/love genre he again selected action genre, this time full comedy dose.

This is pure Trivikram( the dialogue writer) magic right from first scene. This movie will be benchmark in terms of writing comedy scenes. His narration in first half is impressive. He just introduces the story in scene 1 and then what follows is a laugh riot. Mahesh is a revelation after his subtle (some call expressionless) performances in his earlier films. He steals the show even in presence of big comedians like Brahmanandam, Sunil, Ali. His slang, mannerisms, look are a treat for his fans.
Trivikram takes too much time – literally entire first half to get into the main story.

The main story is complicated, new and very difficult to digest for the audience. The concept of god is developed slowly through the second half but it is very superficial to human mind.

It is difficult to connect to a superficial concept when it is told in a serious fashion (Reincarnation is an exception since somehow majority of people got acquainted with the subject). Audience can get connected with the central character if he is shown as a Don, person reborn to save world but accepting him as a GOD is new and will always be new.
But Trivikram who has an excellent main storyline instead of convincing audience about his story uses Mahesh to make fun of the concept of GOD and tries to narrate the story to the audience.Same technique was earlier applied in BABA in which a very serious concept was narrated with Rajini questioning the concept in a satire way.
He weaves almost every scene till the last 20 minutes with punch dialogues (which are going to be legendary after DVD release) but loses track of making audience involved with the main story line. Instead he focused on creating comedy sequences.

The following scenes did not make the necessary impact:
1) Mahesh realizing that there is a god in every positive heart.
2) The villain’s interest in destroying village by creating fear among public is silly for a big businessman who can easily pay compensation for the villagers, evacuate people using power(villagers love to their village is not established which could have strengthened the story)

Performances:
Instead of focusing on details of the story Trivikram focused on presenting Mahesh in a completely new avatar. He dominates the screen in every scene. His comedy timing is so perfect. You will seriously miss some of the comedy scenes while laughing out for scenes.
Anushka is gorgeous but could not match ultra-slim look of Mahesh. There are many comedy tracks in the movie and each comedian did their part well in spite of limited screen space.
Shafi and Rao Ramesh gave top notch performances but their characters are larger than life.
Music:
BGM by Mani Sharma especially during fight sequences elevates the mood. But the picturisation of songs is a big letdown compared to audio.
Taxi Taxi failed to give a superb intro song to Mahesh. Piliche was beautifully shot and Sada Shiva song is not upto the expectations(especially for the fans of song). Two songs choreographed by Ahmed Khan are strictly average.
Makathika is pick of the movie with Mahesh showing his grace in his dancing. Prem Rakshit makes Babu to perform Moon walk and Mahesh shocks everyone with his dances.
Editing:
The narration in first half is supported well by editing but editing in second half is half baked. The graphics editing in songs is pain in the eyes.
Photography:
It can be easily rated as one of the best shot films in TFI. The tints used for village setting, the look of songs is brilliant.
Fights:
A lot of rope work mars the effect of fights. Opening fight and Interval fight are pick of the fights.

It is a feast for people who like Trivikram dialogues and die hard fans of Mahesh will easily watch for 3 times for his screen presence. He is GOD of Telugu Cinema. Even if you hate this movie don’t be shocked if you end up watching this movie in DVD for 10 times.

Movies have been made earlier based on the concept of fear. My best including a scene from Dhoolpet where Dhanush’s mother is killed by his father and Dhanush sits quietly in his house fearing his father can come any time to even kill him. Selvaraghavan captured beautifully (even though only for 10 minutes) the fear when Dhanush’s father enters the house. Maryadaramanna coming from the stable of SS Rajamouli shows fear in a completely new genre. SS Rajamouli attempts comedy with Sunil immediately after stupendous success of Magadheera.
Rajamouli has cleverly given details of story during promotions and it actually lowered expectations which people expect from him (Gory scenes, mass songs).
Rajamouli depended heavily on narration for this film. He attempts to show several emotions in this movie. He starts with a flashback episode showing factionism and then presents a loser role for Sunil. It shifts to a soft love story between Sunil and Saloni. Then an intense atmosphere in which he tried to show comedy. Getting right scenes in this atmosphere is actually a difficult task. He gets it right in some scenes but they appear repetitive and boring after a certain time. In the climax sequences he again showed his trademark action sequences.
Narration appears jolted, quite confused in which genre it follows. Sunil appears too stiff for such a comical role in the first half leaving audience expecting a riot from him disappointed by limited number of comedy scenes in the film.
Screenplay is plain, obvious, and trivial. Characters are one-dimensional and do not have a graph. They carried same emotions in the entire movie.
Music is average and is let down by the placement, picturisation of songs. But Keeravani gave some splendid bit songs as a part of re-recording which helped in the elevation of certain scenes. Parugulu thiyyi by Balu gives a nice start for climax and movie picks up from there followed by a trademark Rajamouli action sequence.
Special emphasis should be made on Graphics as there is lot of CG used for this movie. This might have helped in presentation but movie gains nothing much from CG.
Similar to earlier Rajamouli movies the climax is a letdown except for the dialogue by Sunil.
Sunil is a big disappointment since there is pretty less comedy coming from Sunil in the movie. His trademark comedy is missing in movie(which might be a strategic action but did not pay actual dividends). Saloni is ok. Brahmaji got so much experience to act in such role. Villains are excellent. Without them the movie would have been a damp squib.
The intention of making a clean family entertainer is visible but failed in making an interesting film. Producers should be commended for making such a film with no stars and family values and it ends as a variety film for Rajamouli. Maryada Ramanna is actually a difficult movie to make and misses out to be a cult film especially for Rajamouli who tried to come out of his action image.





Raavan review

There is always a school associated with a director but it is very rare to associate a name from Mani school. His subjects contemporary dealing with Kashmir terrorism(Roja), Srilankan Tamil issue(Amrutha), North East (Dil Se), Dravidian politics( Iddaru), Bombay attacks, Karna angle in Gharshana have been already classified as classics. May be a itch or some ambition but Mani tried his ambitious Raavan by questioning the mythology Ramayan.

His theme is just a question on Ramayan. He wanted to explore the myth surrounding Ravan. He wanted to show good and bad and what if bad prevails on the assumed right side and good prevails on the assumed wrong side.

But the way he starts the way is flawed. He cans a superb establishment shot and then directly kidnaps Aishwarya. There are no scenes to show the invincible nature of Ravan. The movie is edited in a non linear style with flash backs narrated in layers. Though some scenes are wonderfully cut the structure of film does not allow you to settle down. The entire first half is so badly structured that small characters like Hanuman, Kumbhakarna, Shurpanaka have proper characterizations but lead actors are shown directly on the screen. It might actually be a trick played by showing their characters through flash backs and by questioning process(Ravan asks Aishwarya, Vikram asks local people) and leaving on audience to interpret who is actual ram and ravan.

Mani tried to project Ravan as a leader from low caste and pits him against Ram who is supposedly from a higher caste. There is a song in which Beera says “Janm naa poocho Jaat na poocho”. He tries to explain the struggle in producing food and adds a perspective of Robin hood to Ravan but he does not get it right. Ravan’s character is poorly developed.
The film suffers mainly from weak script, dialogues and performances from lead pair. Editing is structurally flawed as it does not make us settled down but is class at some places. Cinematography is top notch. The way waterfalls are shot and the forest environment is captured gives a real feel to the film. Styling is ok and not great. Abhishek’s character is confusing in terms of style.

Mani’s direction is strictly average. He did not properly conceive Ravan’s character and it is clearly evident in the way he shows Ravan showing some hilarious histrionics. He was not clear the way Ravan has to be shown. The lust(atleast there is no love between Ravan and Aishwarya) is not established.

Songs are nicely shot but not again to the standards. Ranjha Ranjha and Beera are given as background scores.
There is absolutely no humour quotient in the movie and thrilling elements like fights are ok with average CG work.

Final word Ravan makes Mani a megalomaniac instead of madras talkies conquering pan indian audience.





Vedam Review

Vedam

Vedam – the format in which it has been told was never done before in Telugu cinema and might be not new for people who have watched Crash.
“Car lonchi chusthe prapancham scenary la kanipistundi bike lo velthe reality kanipistundi” – Gamyam. Gamyam was about realisation and had a cinematic approach of opting for naxalism in the climax.
Vedam is a satire on human life. It explores all human needs, importance of money, aspirations of rural people. ambitions of youth, bubble sized dreams of a street side kick. It has a simple story with a simple philosophy in the movie.It revolves around 4 characters who get down to a hospital in the climax which everyone knew before the release of the movie.
Allu arjun repeated the magic act of Allari Naresh in Gamyam here. The writing for his character and old man’s character is outstanding. The way human needs are explained, the ambitions, the frustrations are dealt in an entertaining way for Allu Arjun’s role. The old man character depicts the life of a old man and his grand son who are bonded under a patel(Zamindari System which was once prevalent in Telangana) is heart touching and evokes lot of sympathy. Anushka character has oomph and her character brings some funny moments but lacks conviction in the sense the graph of anushka’s character is pretty much same for entire movie. The dialogues for her character are hard hitting but do not take the movie to a next level.Manchu manoj’s character is average. There is no weight to his character and screen time for his character is also less. His character is of no big use to the movie though he pitches in a good performance. Manoj bajpai’s character is predictable.
Dialogues are the asset of this movie and Allu arjun is the face and soul of this movie. The way his character develops is amazing. Career best performance.
Music is nice but could have been better.Photography is top class.Editing was jerky in the first half and considering format it was okay but editing in the second half was terrific.
Climax is again a cinematic approach of ending everything in hospital with Mumbai attack theme and looks artificial for some time and appears forced after some really novel scenes.
Keeping Jaaneman poster in the flashback, Brahmanandam’s locket sequence which later saves anushka, allu arjun having extra three thousand from his mother are some scenes which increases authenticity of film.
On the whole Allu arjun(doing a street side and a urban role is possible only for him) and old man’s character(actually he did not act he lived in the character) make Krish’s vedam a real film. Other things are cinematic. It is a class film for mass people and mass film for class people.
This movie is a rare attempt which touches different shades of human life and which could be understood by everyone. It could be judged as preachy, predictable but hits the right place successfully. Krish did full justice to his script.
This might be a trend setter which might force film makers to come with a novel idea with commercial elements in the coming days. Inspite of cinematic approach in the climax and Manchu manoj’s plot Vedam is a take on human life especially for Allu Arjun’s and old man plots.
PS:After watching Vedam I felt Gamyam with Manchu Manoj and Allu Arjun would have been terrific.





SIMHA REVIEW

SIMHA REVIEWFather hits villain and villain goes into coma and it’s the turn of son to get back villain to a normal and kill him.
Sounds cliché, but when you have a tight screenplay with Balayya getting power punch dialogues, roaming around with “Rajamouli Kathi” , dancing, double meaning dialogues with Namitha then it is a feast for mass audience.
Director Boyapati Seenu takes up a time tested subject and plays to the gallery. First half deals with the sole aim of establishing heroism and adding songs (Balayya and Namitha). Story is wafer thin and sounds very rotten like Acid Case, Drugs but the way director elevates heroism through these scenes is commendable.
The basic advantage of the movie is the way all central characters except Senior Balayya are established in the first half which indirectly create curiosity towards flash back episode.
Second half starts with a bang with Narasimha and Balayya gets to deliver some punch dialogues which we have been missing since Lakshmi Narasimha. He is best in business in terms of dialogue delivery and his diction, modulation is outstanding.
Highlights:
1. Photography – Reminds of Senthil photography in some action scenes
2. Direction – extracted nice performances from all actors esp. Balayya
3. Editing – the way 2 scenes are correlated in first half is nice
4. Fights – One word. Highlight
For all of those who think Balayya can deliver a big hit sans graphics, cheap scenes then this is surely for them. For remaining who can’t relish these mass masala film it may be a rehash of jayam manadera, etc.
Got tired of watching small time heroes fighting big villains then watch this as Balayya calls for “Bring 10, plus 10, plus 10”.
It is a complete movie for masses and if you think something is missing in the movie ->
“aakali thirindi balayya fans ki ee matram chaalu”
On the flip side excessive violence, vulgarity have a major say in this flick – but who cares as the target audience fans will be surely delighted about “Vamsham” dialogues and the epilogue which shows Balayya pic on a Yellow flag signaling his stronger role in TDP.





Love Sex Aur Dhoka Movie Review

Dibakar Banerjee whose previous films Khosla ka Ghosla and under-rated Oye Lucky Lucky Oye(which has its due at national awards) takes a handy cam and goes true Hollywood style. The film garnered much pre-release hype thanks to the provoking title, some censor troubles.
LSD got a right platform in terms of release hinting audience of its shocking value.
LSD looks like a You tube video titled “Girl caught nude” having 1 lakh views and ready to titillate you only to end its watching in less than 1 minute.

LSD follows the non-linear screenplay technique. It is 3 short stories which signify Love Sex and Dhoka. Love is about a couple who dream of making a film and sending it to Aditya Chopra. LOVE part was beautifully handles by the director similar to the childhood sequence in Oye Lucky.The technique,writing, performances especiallly by heroine’s father are top notch. Though the caste reference was removed by censors the LOVE part makes a decent impact on viewers for its portrayal of filmy romance between its leading couple.

SEX which comes with lot of expectations takes too long to establish the mood. Content is pretty average or mediocre. Dialogues are good/may be good for its explicit content but tempo goes down with repetitive scenes, lousy performances and caricature characters. SEX comes as a disappointment in terms of entertainment and shocking value.

DHOKA brings the screenplay writer to the front interweaving all three plots(though not connected in terms of actual story). It is about a aspiring ite girl who refuses to sleep with KING of pop and who joins with a Sting reporter to get a chance to act in music video. The media angle and the sensationalism it tries to bring using Sting operations is well shown. Without making it visible on screen the director shows the various situations the reporter is put in and makes it a decent watch,

On a whole LSD missed a great chance to trigger a debate on Voyeurism and contemporary cinema. The way the director handled the technique and dialogues are top notch. It cannot be compared to DevD because of the latter’s excellent music and content/screenplay. LSD’s music is a big letdown(or did we hear it). The ring tone of “Thu Nangi Achi Lagti” is not loud and does not speed up the momentum when the tempo goes down.

As a character says in the film “LSD is like a Scandal which people watch on Sunday and forget on Monday”. Kudos for a brave effort but not a worthy successor to director’s filmography.

Ye maaya Chesave Review

To be honest I cannot write a honest review for this movie coz it blew me away. This is a modern montage unlike the montage songs we get to see set in 16th century with hero wearing a hat and heroine in a chariot. This is like Geetanjali in color mode.
This movie reaffirms the fact you do not require a great story for a good movie. Gowtham menon offers the audience an love story which we were used to see in dubbing reels with age old dubbing artists doing the job for the likes of Aravind Swamy and Madhavan.
The movie starts with the marriage scene of Jessie played by Samantha. From then the director presents a beautiful visual tale of hero-love-at-first-sight-propose-sorry-letsbefriends-love-parents-opposition.
Story is simple. It is about a aspiring director who is in madly in love with Jessie, a Kerala Christian whose parents are class-we-hate-movies. Then starts a passionate love story between the love pair. The movie follows the traditional love story told since ages but Gowtham menon backed the movie with slick visuals, crisp editing. His taking is exemplary.
AR Rehman is awesome. His background score is fresh and especially his background music in scenes involving angry Jessi with a rock touch is innovative.
In actors Samantha is picture perfect and delivers a splendid performance. Krishnudu invokes laughter. Naga Chaitanya delivers a honest performance. He has surely lived upto his father’s legacy. The role had more closeups and full conversations which involved a intense performance and he made sure that Gowtham’s vision was intact.
Special mention to Cinematography for stunning visuals. The dubbing done for heroine sets the mood and suits heroine well.
Watch it for the characterizations, technical brilliance, direction and I am sure that this would remind you of your dream of having a conversation with your dream girl and explaining why you love her so much and giving her a hug only to realise that she has accepted your love. Go buy a ticket and this is surely a 1st Class-AC Ticket for the audience who got accustomed to General Compartment love stories.
PS:I would have loved it more if the usage of English in this movie is minimal. Some dialogues like “I want to make love with you all the time” will go unnoticed by rural population. Since makers had a campaign saying Love is for all groups they should have taken care of this aspect.

There are honest films and some which try to be honest.Last week we saw MNIK which saw Karan Johar trying to do a honest film. He wanted to prove to be a serious film maker. Whatever may be the opinion of public, he tried to keep the plot as simple as possible giving a open ended solution of hope over hatred. Sekhar tried to bring on screen the current political system and a solution for its betterment. A herculean task ahead. Sekhar Kammula tries to move away from his trademark love stories has surely written a great script. He has the perfect hero – lanky 6+ height, Kota, Good Music,Current political status everything going in his favor. Even then Leader does not deliver what it promises.

The movie starts on with a superb music with Gandhi assembly in backdrop. The immediate sequences of CM’s death and immediate power play reminds us of YSR. The film takes a very promising note with Kammula extracting great performance from Suhasini,Rana(who picks up lately). Writing is class with adequate comedy in the form of Harshawardhan and Priya. The way director establishes hero is nice but has lot left to be desired.
Second half takes a U-turn with the entry of heroine whose characterisation is not well-written or edited for some reasons. The film steeps down after Richa’s entry and the connection of her with story sounds very unconvincing.
Sekhar Kammula tries to infuse his ideology with a idelaitic climax and a hope for people in means of public mandate for Rana.

Analysis:

Sekhar Kammula is a goood writer but he did not handle direction well. His shot making is amateurish and utilisation of sound is ordinary. One would expect a tight screenplay with more closeups and sound but film falls flat. Temp goes down especially in the second half and never gets back. Climax never brings in the positivity which was supposed to lift the viewer’s mood. Rana is good but does not lift the film for its larger than life hero.
Scenes imitating NTR doing bath on roads do not have conviction and appear superficial for a new comer.
Background music is underutilized and never lifts the tempo.

Performances:

Kota is good as usual. Subbaraju gets a meatier role and excels. Priya who plays role of reporter is ok. Richa is glamorous but her character is speed breaker of story.
Rana daggubati is nice.

Sekhar Kammula has written a larger than life epic and he fails in bringing it on the screen.
Rarely we get a chance of idealistic story which portrays change in society by a big director and gaining such pre-release buzz but this is a golden opportunity wasted.
