Act 1

Location: BlueFox Bar,Hyderabad

Three friends(Naresh,Sarva,Navdeep) reminiscing about college days in a bar. Naresh and Sarva are meeting Navdeep after a long time. Their discussion leads to dating and Navdeep says he is currently dating Swathi. Naresh and Sarva convince Navdeep to attend a farm house party and to bring Swathi along. Navdeep texts Swathi that his friends will be coming over to pick her to the farmhouse and he will be joining the party as he has to collect package at other end of city. Naresh and Sarva pick Swathi at her office. They introduce themselves as friends of Navdeep and that they have attended college with her. Swathi insists on going home to get an additional pair of dress. Naresh casually asks whether she is dating Navdeep, Swathi says he is her best friend who understands her completely and probably the only person who understood her. Swathi brings them to her home; packs quickly and then they start to farmhouse. They start talking to each other in the car. Naresh takes a detour to his home to pick some stuff before they head to farmhouse. Swathi calls her friend to join the party and realizes that there were no students with names – Naresh and Sarva in her class. She smells something wrong, tries to get out of the house immediately and finds that the house is locked.

Sarva comes alone and then explains the situation. He and Naresh have been following her since long time with no success. So they tricked Navdeep into believing that they are his college friends, gained his trust and then put Swathi into their trap. She is now kidnapped for 20 days and have to co-exist with them in the house. They have to work together to get their basic necessities and there will be no external contact with the world. There will be no physical harassment and anyone violating the rules will be straight out of the home leaving only other guy. At the end of 20th day they will come to a consensus whose love is genuine and they will have a chance to propose Swathi. Swathi will have the final say. She has the right to reject the proposal and then leave the house and there will be no contact from them thereafter.

There shall be no contact with the external world for the rest of 20 days.

Manam – The hidden theme (?)

 
Five minutes into Manam, I was convinced that the director was using recurring acts a.k.a motifs as a technique to establish connect between the various threads in the story and I started paying minute attention to the characters, detailing, set work, hand gestures, everything which I could see. But there was one property in the background which caught my attention. In the scene where Nagarjuna enters a bookstore to follow Samantha, there is a shot which shows ‘Oedipus the king’ on a book shelf. With whatever knowledge I had about Oedipus complex at that time – (that it is a psychological situation where a son gets attracted to his mother), I slowly started looking with suspicion about how characters unfold( this was strongly reinforced by a comment made by my friend casually about a possible likening of Nag by Samantha), but the movie never explored any of such things which I was wildly imagining and I got immersed into the movie, forgot about that and starting enjoying Chay’s movie( I am not reviewing this movie mainly because of my bias towards Chay 🙂 )

Later I started exploring about this novel and what I initially thought of a coincidence, I slowly started to think if the director intentionally had that shot to suggest a hidden theme in the movie. In the movie, Nagarjuna is shown as interested in reading children books and he has good knowledge about children books. Samantha sees him with a book “World’d greatest mother” and asks his advice on buying a book to give as a gift to someone. In this sequence, there is a shot of Oedipus the king. The book surprisingly is a Greek tragedy with a lot of insight on fate and I was slowly trying to connect the movie with the book. In the book( which is actually a trilogy), there is a king whose fate is “pre-written” to kill his father and he tries to escape from that fate. In greek tragedies, it used to be a notion that fate is irreversible and we do not have any control on fate until there were philosophers who questioned that. Fate has been often linked with horrifying situations and Manam captures that where the fate of the characters in one of their births is sealed by situations out of their control and where the tragedy is built out of the situation and not because of the exploration of the character.

In Manam, the situations are similar where tragedy is shown without much character development for the children while they were in a stage where was no character development but slowly the characters fully evolve but they still try to escape from fate to avoid committing the same mistake again and in turn become victim of fate again. Oedipus can be ANR who is responsible for his fathers death who is a Zamindar(similar to king) in the movie. As I write this blog, I can wildly imagine more theories but this was just an exercise of pure imagination thinking whether the director really envisaged all this.

The chances of this theory being true is not even .0001% and it must have been a random book in the book shelf, but if for some reason this is true, oh man this is magic 🙂

A day at the lake – My first short film

Sid has a recurrent day. He is dejected in life, uninterested in things around him. He decides to end his life one day and walks into the lake. He is interrupted by a stranger. The stranger smokes and is in complete contrast to Sid. He is fun loving and interrupts Sid. He is in a hurry and asks Sid to hold his cigarette. Sid initially reluctant to smoke, remembers his good olden days and starts to enjoy the little things around him. Sid wakes up again and his life is now changed. Forever.

Starring Siddharth Somayajula as Sid and K. Sumanth Reddy as Smoker. The film is shot in College Station, Texas, US.

A day at the beach

It’s raining heavily. Vasu asked Gautam to go out and get some ice cream. Gautam would generally be interested in such things but today he was not in a mood. He got Vasu fudge from the chocolate factory and got himself a pack of cigarettes.

He did not feel like drinking today. He went to the terrace and started watching his favorite film for the zillionth time.

He told to himself – but how many days like this?

He got a call – it was from Gomo- The Love Guru. Gomo usually calls on Friday nights and gives his free advice to everyone on phone after he is drunk. Gautam was his favorite because he patiently listens to all the crap. This time it was about a group of boys who go to a garden and steal mangoes. Everyone took two mangoes and started running but Gomo was staring at the tree. Gautam asked “Why?” Gomo likes active listeners and an elated Gomo told Gautam “Everyone were happy that they had handful of mangoes but I was happy that the rest of mangoes on the tree are mine”. Gomo was out (he was drunk and fell asleep).

That small line was like enlightenment to Gautam, he took another King ‘s cigarette and on that raining day he lost the count of how many he smoked. He felt like a King.

He opened Orkut – Gautam used to orkut a lot during his study at Gitams University. He had 300 friends of which 100 were girls. He jumped to the last button, which gave his initial scraps.

He was pleasantly surprised by the scraps, which were sent by girls to him. Especially Neethu, he told Vasu about Neethu and how he feels excited and how his hand is vibrating by the mention of her name even today. But Vasu made fun of him saying it might be because of the cheap brand of cigarettes he is smoking these days, you are having this nerve weakness because of that – he said. Gautam got irritated and warned Vasu about informing Vasu’s girl friend regarding Vasu’s cheap liquor activities.

Room was silent. Vasu was playing guitar and it was still raining. Gautam was compiling a scrap since 1 hour and after many edits/deletes he finally clicked the send button.

It was a week and Gautam did not get any reply for the scrap. Neethu was his close friend during his college days and used to call him daily. Like every youth who ignore girls who hit them and try to search for gold in desert, even Gautam ignored and badly avoided Neethu and started going behind Rithu. But Rithu being smart went behind that fat, obese, dumb guy leaving Gautam to watch movies on a personal laptop during weekend.

He thought about Neethu, she had the best smile ever and many thought she was 21 for her look. But she was childish and he remembered all phone conversations and the amount of crying she used to do when he did not call her one day. This was shocking to him but he thought something might have happened drastically in her life. He was thinking of different ways in which “that” guy could have screwed up Neethu’s life.

Gautam was in Hyderabad and it was Indian Independence Day. Neethu was 600 kilometers away from him. Gautam told Vasu about a quick trip to Vizag. Vasu was puzzled about Gautam’s such quick decision and asked him the purpose of visit. Gautam told him about watching “Kotha Bangaru Lokam” in Vizag. There will be many girls in the theater. Vasu was still puzzled.

Gautam scrapped Neethu regarding the movie plan and left his number. About 100 kilometers from Hyderabad during his travel, he got a call from Neethu. She told him about her plan to watch the movie with her friends and asked him to join the movie. Any guy with sense would have said, please carry on but Gautam lost all his sense thanks to his under grad days. He confirmed that he would come to the movie.

He had Rayban shades on and was looking at the Vizag crowd after a really long time. He wished his eyes had a camera. Neethu came with her friends, she was a completely changed woman now, Gautam felt like being a part of women battalion and wondering whether he would focus on watching the movie. He wanted to tell Neethu how angry he was on her because she was not replying to his scraps. But Neethu started the conversation apologizing him citing work. Gautam noticed the fear in Neethu’s eyes. He could understand the pain she would have taken in convincing her family about going to a movie. She must have not informed about his presence to her family.

Gautam could not control his emotion and said “ I am really happy to meet my best friend after a long time”, it might be mean being that sentimental but it was accidental and spontaneous. He was confused but she was happy listening to that.

Neethu said “It’s been so many days since we met”; Gautam felt like telling it’s been years damn it but just smiled to her. He asked her “it’s 4 years since we met, did you never feel like talking to me?” Neethu blurted at him “I always tried to be in contact with you initially but you did not respond and I felt that I might be disturbing you”

She asked her friends to enter the hall first. She and Gautam sat next to each other. Initially Gautam wanted to get introduced to all the girls but now that thought is not in his mind. Then they moved into the beach, they were wet and she adjusted her pajama and he was staring at her. She did not complain but told him I thought you are a kid.

Gautam had a mood swing; he went back from the water and then took the cigarette from his pocket. He was trying to relax and ease the situation. He forgot that there is a girl who might be irritated with smoking. She asked him – From when did this start? Gautam tried to explain why did he initially resort to smoking, which became a norm after that but she knew his reply. She asked him to get over her else I will give you one tight slap, she said as a warning.

Gautam told in a soft voice, who else other than her? Neethu tried to explain how girls were behind him during college. Gautam looked at her and said, “ Shall we go to Bhimili?”

He did not fear about the consequence and even she did not feel bad. He went close to her, put his hand around her waist and then started to walk on the beach. Even he could not understand from where did he get that courage.

They saw the light finally and he asked her – Shall we go to the hotel? Even under these circumstances she understood it was about going to a restaurant. She asked him to stay for a while. There were tears in her eyes. He was trying to console her. He went closer to her. He was almost near to her lips and hugged her to console her. She was still crying and he took her close to him and said he will take care of everything and kissed her. He did not knew whether it was French style or not but he was sure that he was on the top of Eiffel tower.

She asked after a while, when he was leaving tomorrow. Gautam told her that he would be leaving today. He tried to explain her, had I told you that I will be leaving today, time would have put us in tension and that’s why I told you a lie that I will be leaving tomorrow. But I felt if not today I would have never got the courage so I kissed you. He then gave a kiss. He was sure it was French this time.

He took the bus on the beach. She asked him about his luggage. He said I came empty-handed but now I am leaving with these memories. It was raining that day and he was eating ice cream.

Gautam was exhausted for travelling continuously. He got up in the morning and saw his mobile. It was a message from Neethu. – You hid about your travel plan to me and even I hid some thing. Remember I was busy before you came over here. Actually a guy was here to see me, my parents arranged it and I did not have any say. He is doing MS in US and my marriage is fixed. In short that was the message.

Gautam wanted to call but he did not have the courage to speak to her now.

After few days, he got the invitation. He went to the wedding with their college gang and she introduced the group to her husband as her college mates, had a group photo clicked. It lasted around 10 seconds.
